Visiting Assistant Professor Department of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College

Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a visiting faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning fall 2023. Candidates with expertise in any area of chemistry are encouraged to apply. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of an extension for an additional year. We seek candidates who have a significant interest in education and are dedicated to becoming an excellent undergraduate teacher. Teaching responsibilities will primarily include a team-taught general chemistry course and its associated laboratory, and/or courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to advise undergraduates in independent research, if desired. Modest funds and space to support the visitor’s research program are available.

Harvey Mudd College is committed to broadening participation in STEM fields. Therefore, experience with or demonstrated ability to teach, mentor, and support students from historically underrepresented groups in STEM is among the criteria for appointment. Your written materials, including your cover letter and teaching statement, should address your interests, experiences and future plans for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Harvey Mudd College is a small and highly selective private undergraduate college of science, mathematics, and engineering. In their first two years, all Harvey Mudd students complete a core curriculum comprising courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics, as well as the humanities, social sciences and arts. Harvey Mudd is a member of the Claremont University Consortium (http://www.claremont.edu), which includes four other undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions. Claremont is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

A Ph.D. is required and postdoctoral experience is desirable. Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching experience and plans (not to exceed 2 pages) and should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted to AcademicJobsOnline. The teaching statement should include plans for how the candidate will promote equitable and inclusive engagement of all students. Candidates interested in mentoring undergraduate research should also include an optional research statement that describes how their proposed projects are suitable for undergraduate co-workers (not to exceed 2 pages). Review of applications is ongoing and will continue until the position is filled. For further information contact: Professor Karl Haushalter (haushalter@g.hmc.edu).
