Position Description:

Position:

The MIT Music and Theater Arts Section is seeking a full-time Lecturer I to meet the growing demand among our undergraduate students in our core music theory classes and enhance our course offerings in music theory.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities are teaching three classes per semester (six per year). Though classes assigned will vary, it is expected that the overwhelming majority of teaching assignments will be in fundamentals of music, in the first year of our harmony and counterpoint (music theory) sequence, and/or in musicianship/ear training. The position requires a primary dedication to teaching and teaching innovation, engaging with students in classes four to five days a week during the 9- month academic year. The rank of Lecturer I holds an initial appointment of three years, with successive reviews, potential for reappointment, and possibility of promotion to Lecturer II.

Qualifications:

The qualified candidate has 2+ years of experience teaching at the university level and holds a PhD or other doctorate (ABD considered) in music (theory or in another music topic, e.g. composition, musicology, pedagogy, performance, etc. intersecting with music theory). Candidate must be a dynamic and innovative teacher.

An active research agenda is not a requirement for the Lecturer I position. However, candidates whose teaching is informed by actively pursuing theoretical or other scholarly research, composition, or performance are preferred.

We welcome candidates whose teaching incorporates technological innovations and/or diverse musical traditions.
