The University of Notre Dame, Department of Physics & Astronomy, invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to work on high contrast direct imaging of exoplanets and/or IR instrumentation. Candidates with a background in optical & IR instrumentation, integral field spectroscopy and/or high contrast direct imaging science are highly encouraged to apply.

Depending upon the applicant’s interests, experience and qualifications, researchers may be involved with instrumentation projects or science programs at Notre Dame. Instrumentation projects are focused on the integration, testing, and commissioning of the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI 2.0) being delivered to Gemini North in 2024 and developing instrument testbed projects at Notre Dame. Science programs include direct imaging observations and research using GPI, and/or direct imaging projects using the CHARIS integral field spectrograph. The successful applicant will work with Prof. Jeffrey Chilcote’s research group at Notre Dame. Prof. Chilcote’s group is involved in both the Gemini Planet Imager upgrade (GPI 2.0), the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey and the CHARIS integral field spectrograph located behind SCExAO at Subaru. 

Notre Dame astronomers use a variety of telescopes, including Keck Observatory and the Large Binocular Telescope. Qualifications include a PhD in physics, astronomy, or a related field, strong written and oral communication, and leadership qualities. The appointment is for two years, with a third-year contingent on performance and continued funding. Base salary will be commensurate with experience.
