Description:

*** this fellowship has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The University of Notre Dame Department of Physics invites applications for the Two-College Research/Teaching Postdoctoral Fellowship. The Two-College Fellow is expected to split their time between conducting research in an area of physics/astrophysics and teaching an introductory physics class with a team of faculty instructors. This is a full-time position with a salary of $57,000 per year and included benefits. The fellow will be provided a discretionary fund of $3,500 per year. The start date is August 15, 2022. The fellowship is renewable annually for up to three years.

The Notre Dame Department of Physics consists of 40 tenured/tenure-track faculty and ~20 research professors, teaching professors and professors of the practice. Research in the department is focused on four major areas: astrophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and high energy/particle physics. Each of these areas includes experimental and theory components. The Two-College Fellow will be matched with a mentor or group of mentors based on their research experience and interests. A summary of research in the Physics Department at https://physics.nd.edu/research/.

The Department of Physics teaches calculus-based introductory physics courses to approximately 400 engineering undergraduates each semester. This is a team-taught course divided into sections of about 100 students. The Two-College Fellow will teach one of the sections and be mentored by the other members of the faculty team. Teaching during the summer is not required, but opportunities are available that include additional compensation.

The Two-College Fellowship was developed by the College of Engineering and the Physics Department within the College of Science to expand introductory physics instruction while mentoring early career physicists/astrophysicists in research and teaching. The Fellowship is made possible by support from the Office of the Provost.

The Department is committed to diversifying its faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, and students and encourages applications from women and members of traditionally underrepresented groups.

A successful applicant is expected to have a PhD in Physics or Astronomy and an interest in science education. A completed application will consist of a cover letter, a detailed CV, a research statement, a teaching statement, and three letters of recommendation.
