KNOWLTON SCHOOL Christos Yessios Digital Fabrication Assistant or Associate Professor of Architecture

The Architecture Section of the Knowlton School at The Ohio State University invites applications for a position at the rank of assistant or associate professor with a research focus on emerging digital design and fabrication technologies. This position is endowed by the Christos Yessios Fund, which is intended to support faculty with the potential to make significant contributions to the field through scholarship, design research, and/or creative design practice.

The architecture faculty at the Knowlton School comprises a cadre of original thinkers concerned with contemporary issues in the field ranging from the tectonics of composite materials to the evolution of human comfort to the distribution of architectural labor across digital networks, among others. As part of the College of Engineering, the Knowlton School presents a unique collaborative platform. This position will allow Knowlton architecture faculty to develop relationships with the landscape architecture and planning sections and with academic units and research centers on and off campus including the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the Simulation Innovation and Modeling (SIM) Center, and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD). The successful candidate will play a central role in developing the Knowlton School’s already robust capabilities in digital fabrication and her/his research and pedagogical agenda will inform the direction of the architecture section. Above all, we seek a colleague who will bring new knowledge, ideas, and perspective to the architecture section and foster partnerships across the school, the college, and the university.

Candidates with a research focus related to emerging digital fabrication tools and related technologies and their implications or contemporary design are encouraged to apply. A wide range of topics will be considered, with preference to those that leverage the School’s resources, especially investigations that focus on computer-controlled fabrication techniques and research in technology, digital media, and material assemblies.

The Knowlton School Housed in Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects’ award-winning building on The Ohio State University’s Columbus Campus, The Knowlton School fosters a singular environment for innovative design research and critical inquiry. Operating within the College of Engineering, the Knowlton School’s three sections, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning enjoy the benefits of a large research institution including collaborative relationships with the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design. Architecture has approximately 300 students, 14 full-time and 20 auxiliary faculty members.

An ongoing catalogue of special programs, including The Baumer Visiting Professorship, the LeFevre Emerging Practitioner Fellowship, and a renowned lecture series and gallery exhibitions series continuously inspire intellectual inquiry of the Knowlton School, and seek to engage all three disciplines beyond their boundaries. The section’s publications include the Source Books in Architecture series. The region’s many cities provide a variety of research opportunities for much of the School’s scholarship and design studios.
