Position Description:    

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers bachelor's degrees in mechanical engineering and aeronautical and astronautical engineering, and master's and doctoral degrees in mechanical, nuclear, and aeronautical and astronautical engineering.

Departmental instructional and research activities include advanced transportation systems (automotive and aerospace), energy and environmental quality, materials and manufacturing, micro- and nanotechnology, nuclear energy, and bioengineering. In July 2010, the Department of Mechanical Engineering completed a merger with the Department of Aerospace Engineering.

Strong research relationships exist with the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA Glenn Research Center, and GE Aviation. Department faculty also provide leadership for the OSU Nuclear Reactor Lab, SIMCenter, Center for Automotive Research, the Center for Precision Forming and the Smart Vehicle Center; the latter two being NSF Industry and University Cooperative Research Centers.

Department faculty members participate in the university-wide Institute for Materials Research and the NSF Nanoscience and Engineering Center for affordable Nanoengineering of Polymeric Biomedical Microdevices, and provide leadership to two ongoing multi-institutional Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives in cryogenic Peltier cooling and plasma assisted combustion.

Position Overview

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University (OSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the broad disciplinary area of applied mechanics. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds related to applied mechanics. Research areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, advanced composite materials and material systems, multifunctional materials, lightweight or multi-material structures, micro-nano materials, bio-inspired or biomimetic structures and materials, biomolecular materials, ceramic composites, and advanced manufacturing.

Experience Requirements

Required: Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline by the start date and should have demonstrated record of excellence in research. The new faculty member is expected to develop and maintain a nationally recognized and externally funded research program at the forefront of their field, collaborate across disciplines, teach and supervise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, develop and teach courses in their area of expertise, and participate in service to the university.

Desired: Successful candidates should be able to participate in multidisciplinary initiatives to support the missions of the department and college pertaining to the focus area of materials and manufacturing for sustainability and resilience and/or other broad priority areas of health and wellness or energy and the environment.
