The Theory of Quantum Matter Unit (TQM) at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher, as part of Japan-wide program investigating quantum liquid crystals.

The program "Physical Properties of Quantum Liquid Crystals" is a collaboration between more than 20 experimental and theoretical research groups across Japan, funded through the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science Kakenhi program for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas. Further details of the program can be found at:

Within this program, the TQM Unit will carry out research in the broad area of quantum liquid crystals (QLC), with an emphasis on the spin-nematic phases occurring in quantum magnets; the numerical simulation of the these phases, and the comparison of these results with experiment.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will have the opportunity to work on these projects, and to collaborate with other members of the QLC program elsewhere in Japan.

Funding is available for 3 years, with start dates negotiable.

Candidates are invited to apply through the website AcademicJobsOnline. Materials required are a CV with publication list; a research statement (1-2 pages), addressing both past research, and interest in the present project; and copies of 2-3 papers (or preprints) representing the candidate’s most interesting work to date.

Candidates should also arrange for a minimum of two letters of recommendation to be uploaded on their behalf.

For primary consideration, please submit all materials by 15th December 2019. Applications arriving later than this will be considered until the posts are filled.

The TQM Unit carries research in the broad area of condensed matter theory, making use of both numerical and analytic techniques. Themes currently represented include, topological aspects of magnetism, quantum spin liquids, statistical mechanics, machine learning, unconventional magnetic excitations, multipolar order and the physics of water. The group also maintains strong links with experimental groups developing and studying new quantum materials. Further details of the TQM Unit can be found at:

OIST Graduate University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action educator and employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty, students and staff. The University strongly encourages women and minority candidates to apply.
