Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2 and Assistant
Professor of Astroparticle Physics Faculty of Science - Physics
The Department of Physics at the University of Alberta
invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the level of
assistant professor in the field of Experimental or Theoretical Astroparticle
Physics. The successful candidate will be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada
Research Chair. The Department of Physics recognizes the importance of
diverse perspectives and experiences, and we deeply value the creativity,
innovation, and new ideas that come through the inclusion of all voices. We are
committed to fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment that
supports success for all individuals. This builds on existing efforts across
the University of Alberta and by the CRC program. Please see: https://www.ualberta.ca/research-services-office/funding-opportunities/canada-research-chairs/public-accountability.html and https://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/equity-equite/index-eng.aspx. As such, preference will be given in this competition to
applications from women, gender minorities, persons with disabilities,
Indigenous peoples, members of visible minorities, and groups that are
traditionally underrepresented in Physics. Candidates in the fields of neutrino physics or dark matter
searches in the current and next generation of experiments are encouraged to apply.
The astroparticle physics group in Alberta is part of the pan-Canadian
MacDonald Institute for particle astrophysics. Candidates will ideally be
working in a field closely related to existing Canadian efforts and would be
looking to strengthen the field of astroparticle physics in Alberta. We
seek an emerging scholar committed to excellence in teaching and research. The
successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Physics. A commitment to leadership
and mentorship of trainees and students from traditionally underrepresented
groups in Physics will be an asset. The Department of Physics has 49 faculty members with
research interests in condensed matter physics, astrophysics, geophysics, and
experimental and theoretical particle physics. The astroparticle physics
group has five faculty members who are involved in these experiments: ARGO,
DarkSide, DEAP3600, IceCube, News-G, PICO, SBC, SNO+, and a future neutrino
telescope in the Pacific Ocean, P-ONE. The members of the Centre for Particle
Physics at the University of Alberta are founding members of the ATLAS
collaboration and are leading the MoEDAL/MAPP experiment searching for exotic particles
at CERN. Nominations are subject to review by the CRC Secretariat, and
appointment as a Canada Research Chair is conditional upon their approval. Tier
2 Canada Research Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e.,
candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10
years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years
from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as
maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have
their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2
justification process. Please consult the University of Alberta CRC Coordinator
(crcadmin@ualberta.ca) for more information. Full program information, including
details on eligibility criteria, can be found on the Canada Research Chairs
website: http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.aspx. The University of Alberta recognizes the legitimate impact
that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a
candidate’s record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken
into careful consideration during the assessment process. The closing date for applications is May 31, 2021. All
qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent
residents will be given priority. If suitable Canadian citizens or permanent
residents cannot be found, other individuals will be considered. Only those
applicants invited for an interview will be contacted. To apply: 1. All applicants to this job posting are required to
self-identify using the following questionnaire. 2. Email (a) a current CV; (b) a description of the proposed
research program; (c) a one-page description of proposed training strategies
(e.g. graduates students and other trainees); and (d) up to three reprints of
recent research articles to: The Selection Committee Email: schan@ualberta.ca Applicants must also arrange to have at least 3 confidential reference letters emailed to the same address with the subject line: CRC Astroparticle Physics Competition #A107844925. Applicants who require an accessibility arrangement for their
application, interview, and/or subsequent recruitment meetings can
contact kgalbrai@ualberta.ca to arrange appropriate accommodations. Note: Online applications are
accepted until midnight MDT of the closing date. |
