Position Description:    

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (http://me.engr.uconn.edu/) and the Management and Engineering for Manufacturing Program at the University of Connecticut (UConn) invite applications for one teaching faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Residence to start at the beginning of Fall 2020 semester. This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track, annually renewable position.

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department at the University of Connecticut provides a vibrant, stimulating and supportive environment for exchanging ideas that advance the frontiers of knowledge. Our faculty have international stature in their fields recognized by prestigious awards, are engaged in ground breaking interdisciplinary research, and actively pursue a dynamic educational atmosphere for our students. The ME Department supports the Management and Engineering for Manufacturing (MEM) Program, a joint program by the School of Engineering and the School of Business. 

The ME Department serves as a UTC Pratt & Whitney Center of Excellence, the department’s yearly research expenditures range between $5-7 million, and its student population currently consists of over 160 graduate students as well as more than 700 undergraduate students. The School of Engineering and the University of Connecticut continue a momentum of unprecedented growth as evidenced by significantly increased research expenditures, and a 20-year state-funded $2.3B initiative to enhance the physical infrastructure as well as research and teaching activities. In response to transformative new partnerships with industry and a state-bonded $1.8B investment in STEM infrastructure and education at the University of Connecticut, the University expects to hire over 500 new faculty by 2023. Key developments driving this growth also include the establishment in 2013 of a General Electric Partnership for Advanced Materials, Pratt & Whitney Additive Manufacturing Innovation Center, Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation, FEI Center of Excellence in Microscopy, Eversource Center for Energy Resiliency, and UTC Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering.

The University campus is located in a beautiful area of New England, with a moderate cost of living and proximity to major cultural, recreational and urban centers of the Northeast. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses primarily focused on various aspects of manufacturing for both the ME Department and the MEM Program, develop senior design projects and provide advisement, and participate in academic advising and service on education-related program, department and university committees. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Department offers excellent teaching and research opportunities in all areas of Mechanical Engineering.  

The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development.  Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related area by the time of appointment.
  2. At least 3 years of prior teaching experience in higher education.
  3. Strong potential for effective teaching
  4. Demonstrated leadership capabilities and proof of prior experience including successful experience working within teams.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Teaching experience and qualifications that most closely match the teaching and research needs within the department
  2. Research experience in engineering education or development of outreach and diversity programs is a plus.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, annually renewable, non-tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2020. The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus with the possibility of assignment at one of UConn’s regional campuses.
