Position Description:    

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Connecticut has an exciting opportunity to add to our faculty in order to expand in exciting new directions and develop existing strengths. This year, the department invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position, at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, focused on advanced and digital manufacturing with a strong emphasis on scientific rigor. Application areas of particular interest include intelligent robotics and automation, applied controls, additive manufacturing, computational design of products and processes, uncertainty quantification and reliability, and data analytics and machine learning informed by physics. Junior candidates with demonstrable potential as well as senior applicants with a distinguished record of achievement, evidenced by leadership in their field of expertise and significant extramural funding, will be considered in other areas related to advanced manufacturing.

Senior faculty will be considered for the Pratt and Whitney Chair within the department.

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department at the University of Connecticut provides a vibrant, stimulating, and supportive environment for exchanging ideas that advance the frontiers of knowledge. Our faculty have international stature in their fields, been recognized by prestigious awards, are engaged in groundbreaking interdisciplinary research, and actively pursue a dynamic educational atmosphere for our students. The ME Department serves as a UTC Pratt & Whitney Center of Excellence, has a yearly research expenditures range between 5 and 7 million dollars, and has a student population currently consisting of over 160 graduate students and more than 700 undergraduate students.  The School of Engineering and the University of Connecticut continue to experience a period of unprecedented growth, evidenced by significantly increased research expenditures and a 20-year state-funded $2.3B initiative to enhance the physical infrastructure along with research and teaching activities. In response to transformative new partnerships with the industry, and a state-bonded $1.8B investment in STEM infrastructure and education at the University of Connecticut, the University expects to hire over 500 new faculty by 2023. Key developments driving this growth also include the establishment in 2013 of a General Electric Partnership for Advanced Materials, Pratt & Whitney Additive Manufacturing Innovation Center, Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation, FEI Center of Excellence in Microscopy, Eversource Center for Energy Resiliency, and UTC Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering.

The state is home to a large number of international, high technology companies. The University campus is located in a beautiful area of New England, with a moderate cost of living and proximity to major cultural, recreational and urban centers of the Northeast. The successful candidate will develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, and have demonstrated outstanding scholarly contributions in research in addition to having a passion for engineering education. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be expected to increase participation among members of underrepresented groups; demonstrate the richness of diversity in the learning experience through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement; integrate multicultural experiences into their instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment; strong background and research interests in at least one of the areas identified above; a record of or demonstrated potential in scholarship and establishing a successful, externally funded research program; a proven record of or commitment to excellence in teaching; and dedication to promoting diversity through teaching, service and/or research. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated outstanding scholarly contributions in research; passion for engineering education; experience in developing research grant applications to funding agencies; experience in conducting research in a competitive interdisciplinary research environment; demonstrated ability to contribute through research, teaching and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2020. The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
