Position Description:

Reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Innovation Partnership Building (IPB) at the UConn Tech Park; the Research Scientist will engage in research, securing extramural funding, planning experiments, evaluating, interpreting and publishing results. This position would have a January 2019 start date and will be renewed annually contingent upon research productivity and successful generation of extramural sponsored projects, including industry agreements and grant funding.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Correlate and Analyze images obtained from multiple microscopy modalities including X-ray Tomography, 3D Focused Ion Beam and Scanning electron microscopy tomography, Optical Imaging etc.
  • 3D Image processing and image fusion on data obtained from multiple imaging modalities using advanced methods such as machine learning.
  • Responsible for writing proposals, running research projects and securing external funding, and publishing high quality reports and publications.
  • Develop new procedures, modify or design lab equipment, and resolves complex design and malfunction problems with equipment.
  • Perform highly specialized tasks and laboratory techniques, requiring precision and accuracy that involve repeatable results, which require frequent problem solving.
  • Resolve difficult problems with sophisticated or sensitive lab instruments/equipment
  • Instructs others in the proper and safe use of a variety of laboratory equipment, material and chemical handling processes, bottled gases and associated distribution systems, laboratory materials and chemicals, ventilation systems, high temperature furnaces, presses, etc.
  • May train and/or oversee the work of other staff including technical support for material characterization instruments at the Innovation Partnership Building.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. PhD in Material Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related field.
  2. At least three years of experience in a relevant field.
  3. Professional interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  4. Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and activities while simultaneously ensuring problems are resolved efficiently and effectively.
  6. Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Prior Experience with Correlative Microscopy and Image Fusion 
  2. Hands-on Experience with 3D tomography imaging techniques (X-ray, FIB\SEM,etc.)
  3. 3D image processing and data analysis
  4. Prior Experience with large data manipulation
  5. Programming Experience in Java, Open GL, C++, etc.
  6. Familiarity with GPU enabled programming
  7. Familiarity with designing and implementing research protocols

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 11-month, annually renewable, non-tenure track position. This position has the possibility of annual reappointments, contingent upon performance and funding. Employment is conditional upon the timely completion of an approved I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form). Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
