Canada Excellence Research Chair - Opportunity in Neutrino Astronomy

The University of Victoria (UVic) is currently accepting applications to the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) program. The CERC program aims to recruit the best global talent to Canada and support the next generation of leaders in order to be at the leading edge of breakthroughs in science, technology & innovation priority areas expected to generate social and economic benefits for Canadians. CERCs are one of the largest and most prestigious awards available globally, providing the world’s top researchers and their teams with up to $8 million over eight years to support their research programs. The successful applicants will be nominated by the University for a CERC position and, upon approval by the CERC program’s selection committee, will then be offered a position at the rank of Professor with tenure. Successful nominees would commence their appointments by spring 2023 at the earliest, and by spring 2024 at the latest.

UVic is consistently ranked in the top tier of Canada’s research-intensive universities. Vital impact drives the UVic sense of purpose. As an internationally renowned teaching and research hub, we tackle essential issues that matter to people, places and the planet. Situated in the Pacific Rim, our location breeds a profound passion for exploration. Defined by its edges, this extraordinary environment inspires us to defy boundaries, discover, and innovate in exciting ways. It’s different here, naturally and by design. We live, learn, work and explore on the edge of what’s next—for our planet and its peoples. Our commitment to research-inspired dynamic learning and vital impact make this Canada’s most extraordinary environment for discovery and innovation. Experience the edge of possibilities for yourself.

UVic acknowledges and respects the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples on whose traditional territory UVic stands, and the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. We are privileged to do our work in a way that is inspired and influenced by their history, customs, and culture and are committed to the ongoing work of decolonizing and indigenizing the campus community.

UVic specifically invites outstanding established scholars with a strong record of research in the field of neutrino astronomy to submit expressions of interest to be nominated for the CERC program. UVic wishes to explore the opportunities for pursuing research in neutrino astronomy using the infrastructure of Ocean Networks Canada, a globally recognized research facility and an initiative of the University of Victoria. The successful applicant will have well-defined plans for future experimental research in neutrino astronomy that utilize local resources, focused on the use of infrastructure supported by Ocean Networks Canada.

UVic’s Department of Physics and Astronomy (https://www.uvic.ca/physics) is a diverse research-intensive unit that is dedicated to providing outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs and fosters a collegial and collaborative environment. The Department’s particle physics group, consisting of nine faculty members and two Institute of Particle Physics (IPP) Research Scientists, benefits from close links with the TRIUMF Laboratory and its staff; collectively they comprise the Victoria Subatomic Physics and Accelerator Research Centre (VISPA), which maintains leading research programs in physics at the energy frontier, precision experiments at e+e- B-factories, accelerator-based neutrino physics, and theoretical particle and astroparticle physics. Experimental particle physics faculty are currently members of the ATLAS, BaBar, Belle II, and Hyper-K collaborations. For more information about the research programs within VISPA, see https://www.uvic.ca/vispa. The Department’s vibrant astronomy group, consisting of seven faculty members, benefits from close relations with the nearby National Research Council Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre and its staff, telescopes and instrumentation, and also has full access to all Canadian facilities. The Astronomy Research Centre (ARC) at the University of Victoria draws membership from the departmental Astronomy group, scientists at NRC Herzberg Astronomy & Astrophysics, and at the TRIUMF laboratory. For more information on the research programs within ARC, see http://www.uvic.ca/arc/.

The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) monitors the west and east coasts of Canada and the Arctic to continuously deliver data in real-time for scientific research that helps communities, governments and industry make informed decisions about our future. Using cabled observatories, remote control systems and interactive sensors, and big data management ONC enables evidence-based decision-making on ocean management, disaster mitigation, and environmental protection. For more information about ONC, see https://www.oceannetworks.ca/.
