CTAC Postdoctoral Research Associate in hydrodynamical and MHD simulations of astrophysical disks

The Center for Theoretical Astrophysics and Cosmology at the Institute for Computational Science (ICS) of the University of Zurich invites applications for a 2 year postdoctoral research associate position (PDRA) to advance hydrodynamical and MHD simulations of protostellar and protoplanetary disks, as well as, more generically, of accretion disks around stars and compact objects. This postdoctoral position is part of the the Swiss NCCR PlanetS (National Centers of Competence in Research – the highest funding level within Switzerland). See nccr-planets.ch for more information on the broad research program and its members. Candidates with previous knowledge in the modelling of radiative transfer in disks and/or the dust/solid phase and its coupling with the gas disk, are particularly sought after. Proficiency in the use of modern supercomputing facilities is expected and essential for this position. A PhD degree in Physics, Astronomy or in a neighbouring discipline is required at the starting date of the appointment.

Faculty members who would primarily act as host of the PDRA are Professors Lucio Mayer and Joachim Stadel. The ICS has a strong track record in carrying out fluid-based simulations that push the state-of-the-art in various fields of astrophysics and cosmology, with recent examples in planet formation being giant impacts simulations (Stadel) and global simulations of magnetized self-gravitating disks (Mayer). While the groups at the ICS develop and use primarily state-of-the-art particle-based codes (ChaNGa, PKDGRAV3, GIZMO-MFM, and the new SPH-EXA Exascale code – https://www.pasc-ch.org/projects/2021-2024/sph-exa2/) candidates whose expertise is primarily in Eulerian hydrodynamics, especially moving mesh codes, will also be considered. Annual salaries start at CHF 96,000. The University of Zurich is an equal opportunity employer. Women and members of minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The scientific computing infrastructure at the University of Zurich is excellent and includes dedicated access to the top-notch facilities of the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano. Zurich offers a very dynamic and international living environment and is consistently ranked as one of the world's best cities for quality of living by the Mercer survey.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae including list of publications, and a research statement summarizing past research achievements and, most importantly, future intended research to be carried out at ICS. The research statement should not exceed 3 pages.

All materials should be uploaded to Academic Jobs Online by January 1st, 2023. The candidate should also arrange for at least 3 letters of recommendation to be uploaded to Academic Jobs Online prior to the deadline. Review of applications will begin immediately. Only complete applications received on or before this date will receive full consideration. Following the initial selection process based on the submitted application documents, suitable candidates may be invited to remote interviews.
