Gates Postdoctoral Fellowship

We are:

Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 50 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.

A Gates postdoctoral fellow is a recent Ph.D. recipient with a research record from prior postdoctoral experience. A Gates Fellow will conduct original research in the Fermilab Theory Division, pursuing their own bold theoretical ideas.

Theory Division hosts a dynamic and supportive community of more than 50 theoretical physicists engaged in cross-cutting collaborations that encompass a broad array of topics in particle theory, astroparticle theory, cosmology and quantum information science. This community is further enhanced by close connections with the University of Chicago and other local universities and colleges, as well as Argonne National Laboratory. Additionally, Theory Division has long-standing international collaborations that include CERN and many institutions in Latin America and Europe. A Gates Fellow will have opportunities to participate in the development of new experimental probes of fundamental physics and interact closely with Fermilab experimentalists.

The term of the Gates Fellowship appointment is five years.
