The Department of Computer Science at Georgia State University (GSU) is seeking to fill a research assistant professor position by Fall 2018. We are inviting applicants with strong research interests in one or more of the following areas Big Data Management (high-volume and high-velocity image, spatial and temporal data sets with needs for unstructured, spatio-temporal, multimedia data retrieval and indexing), Big Data Analytics (large scale data science, real-time forecasting/prediction, distributed machine learning, data visualization, and cloud computing), and Computer Vision (scientific image analysis, pattern/object recognition and tracking, deep neural networks, and content-based image retrieval). Strong candidates with related experience will be given consideration as well. The new faculty member will help build an interdisciplinary Center of Excellence with the theme of Big Data Mining, Space Weather and Space Climate, in our response to the National Space Weather Strategy formulated by the White House in 2016. Our interdisciplinary research center is being created in conjunction with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy at GSU. This position is a part of GSU Next Generation Faculty Program that will include a number of tenure-track faculty, research faculty and postdoctoral hires in the above departments to work closely with recent senior faculty hires (Dr. Rafal Angryk, Dr. Piet Martens, and Dr. Stuart Jefferies) and our postdoctoral associates and students.

This position is fully supported by the university for 3 years, with an additional 2 years of university support at the 50% level possible if external funding is secured for the remaining salary. Research faculty with outstanding accomplishments, an interest in teaching and desire for tenure may qualify for tenure-track faculty positions in the future. Applicants shall have the following basic qualifications: 1) Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, statistics or closely related field, 2) evidence of the ability to establish and maintain a successful research program, 3) evidence of the ability to work in a large, collaborative and interdisciplinary effort. Postdoctoral research experience is not required, but is a significant plus. Applications should include 1) a CV, including a complete publication list, 2) a statement of research interests and a description of how this research is aligned with the above research initiative, and 3) contact information for at least three references. All materials should be submitted via portal, where you will be asked to choose your primary and secondary research areas. Applications received by December 1, 2017, will receive full consideration.
