The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers bachelor's degrees in mechanical engineering and aeronautical and astronautical engineering, and master's and doctoral degrees in mechanical, nuclear, and aeronautical and astronautical engineering.

Departmental instructional and research activities include advanced transportation systems (automotive and aerospace), energy and environmental quality, materials and manufacturing, micro- and nanotechnology, nuclear energy, and bioengineering. In July 2010, the Department of Mechanical Engineering completed a merger with the Department of Aerospace Engineering.

Strong research relationships exist with the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA Glenn Research Center, and GE Aviation. Department faculty also provide leadership for the OSU Nuclear Reactor Lab, SIMCenter, Center for Automotive Research, the Center for Precision Forming and the Smart Vehicle Center; the latter two being NSF Industry and University Cooperative Research Centers. Department faculty members participate in the university-wide Institute for Materials Research and the NSF Nanoscience and Engineering Center for affordable Nanoengineering of Polymeric Biomedical Microdevices, and provide leadership to two ongoing multi-institutional Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives in cryogenic Peltier cooling and plasma assisted combustion.

Position Overview

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University invites applications from outstanding individuals for a tenure track faculty position with primary focus on robotics. The anticipated start date is August 2018, but the search will continue until the position is filled. This search will consider candidates having the expertise to develop a strong research program in a promising area of robotics, including, but not limited to the mechanical design and control of robotic systems such as bio-inspired or bio-mimic robots, soft robots and reconfigurable robots with applications in the manufacturing, medical, service or space exploration context. Though candidates are primarily sought at the assistant professor level, exceptionally qualified applicants at the associate professor level may be considered.

Experience Requirements

Required: An earned doctorate in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or an appropriate related field is required. We seek candidates with demonstrated ability to conduct research at the highest level, and with a commitment to outstanding teaching and mentoring of students.

Desired: The successful candidate will be expected to attract funding to develop and sustain active sponsored research programs, teach core undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and develop new graduate courses related to their research expertise.
