Position Details:

The Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) is the Graduate Center’s University-wide venture that elevates CUNY’s legacy of scientific research and education through initiatives in five distinctive, but increasingly interconnected disciplines: environmental sciences, nanoscience, neuroscience, photonics, and structural biology. The ASRC is designed to promote a unique, interdisciplinary research culture with researchers from each of the initiatives working side by side in the ASRC’s core facilities, sharing equipment that is among the most advanced available. The Structural Biology Initiative features seven tenure-track and research-track faculty members, pursuing a slate of research problems across biological and chemical topics using techniques as diverse as cryo-EM, NMR, X-ray diffraction, solution biophysics, and advanced microscopy. The Initiative also hosts state-of-the-art core facilities in three different areas: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), and X-ray crystallography. The X-ray crystallography facility is equipped with a Rigaku Alchemist DT liquid handler, two ARI Gryphon crystallization robots, and two Rigaku Minstrel DT crystal imagers at room temperature and 4°C. The Daniel Keedy Lab is part of the Structural Biology Initiative.

The Daniel Keedy Lab seeks a Research Associate. This position is scheduled to begin in early 2018. The Daniel Keedy Lab’s goal is to elucidate the role of protein flexibility in allosteric regulation and to use that knowledge to control the function of dynamic, biomedically important enzymes such as tyrosine phosphatases. To accomplish this, the Lab combines cutting-edge experimental and computational techniques in structural biology, including multitemperature X-ray crystallography, high-throughput protein ligand structure determination, and new algorithms for modeling alternative protein conformations based on electron density maps. The incumbent will gain experience in structural biology research to aid their future career goals. This position reports to Dr. Keedy.

Duties include but are not limited to: - Independently conducts research in structural biology under the guidance of Dr. Keedy; - Maintains detailed records of experiments; - Collaborates with other lab members; - Directly contributes to writing papers; - Works with the Principal Investigator to write fellowship applications; - Contributes to regular lab meetings; - Participates in journal clubs and other discussion-format meetings; presents at local and non-local scientific meetings; - Assists with components of the Lab’s grant applications; - Contributes to a positive scientific environment; - Performs other duties as assigned.

General Duties:

- Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others. - Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding. - Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data. - Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings. - Collaborates with internal and external colleagues. - Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties.

Qualifications:

Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

A preferred candidate should have:

- Ph.D. degree in structural biology, biophysics, computational biology, or a related field. - Several years of experience studying proteins or other macromolecules and ability to try new techniques. - Experience or familiarity with X-ray crystallography, a programming language, the command line, and protein purification. - Driver’s license or willingness to obtain one.
