The Summer English Immersion Program for Engineering Masters Students is a 4-week full-time program that includes four two-week courses—three on oral communication and one on US academic culture—as well as tutoring, social activities, and introductions to key campus resources (https://www.engineering.cornell.edu/admissions/graduate-admissions/admissions-meng-students/summer-meng-english-immersion-program ). This program will take place between July 13 and August 10, 2018, with classes starting on July 16.

This program is available only to incoming international students in Cornell’s engineering masters programs (M.Eng., M.S., and M.P.S), and is a collaboration between Cornell Engineering and the Cornell English Language Support Office. This program is designed to focus on the oral communication skills and aspects of US culture that professional masters students need for success in academic and professional settings. Engineering masters programs are fast-paced, and require students to very quickly engage with speaking-intensive courses, networking, and other social situations.

Position Summary: The instructors will play a key role in delivering the curricular elements of this summer English immersion program, under the guidance of the program’s Lead Instructors and program directors. Depending on program enrollment, class sizes will average 16 students. Each instructor will teach two consecutive two-week courses, either “Improving Pronunciation” and “Designing and Delivering Effective Presentations” OR “Taking Part in Discussions” and “US Academic Culture” (see course descriptions here: https://www.engineering.cornell.edu/admissions/graduate-admissions/admissions-meng-students/summer-meng-english-immersion-program/meng ). Instructors will be provided with the course learning objectives, a sample syllabus, and sample materials.

Responsibilities include: • Attending professional development meetings in late June and early July focused on the two courses to be taught • Teaching two courses, either “Improving Pronunciation” and “Designing and Delivering Effective Presentations” OR “Taking Part in Discussions” and “US Academic Culture” • Working closely with the lead instructors and other instructors to develop curricular materials and lesson plans during weekly staff meetings • Meeting individually with students as needed • Participating in the program’s opening and closing receptions (July 13 and August 10)

QUALIFICATIONS: Masters degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, or a related field is required. Experience teaching English oral communication skills is essential. Experience teaching international graduate students or working with professional communication is a plus.

APPLICATIONS: Review of applications will begin April 30 and will continue until the position is filled.
