Description

The Applied Nuclear Physics Lab in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist, in the area of Nuclear Science, Nuclear Engineering or in a closely related field. The candidate will perform work under Professor Kai Vetter.

Appointment Length: This is a full-time, one-year position at 100% and is renewable for a second year depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Anticipated start date is June 2018.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities include but are not limited to: Support research and development of advanced nuclear instrumentation concepts and systems. Participate and lead in the planning and execution of projects in radiation detection and multi-sensor and networked systems. Supervise undergraduate and graduate students in the design and execution of experiments, data analysis, reporting, and technical presentations. Manage the program website and updates on research and measurement results. Contribute to peer-reviewed publications.

Basic Qualifications (At time of application): • PhD or equivalent degree in Nuclear Science, Nuclear Engineering or in a closely related field.

Additional Qualifications (By Start Date): • A minimum of three years of relevant experience. • Broad experience with radiation detection and multi-sensor systems, including the design, set up, and execution of experiments. • Knowledge in data and signal processing from radiation and complementary detectors such as environmental or contextual sensors. • Knowledge in algorithm development and statistical analysis. • Demonstrated data analysis skills and proficiency in C++ and Python. • Demonstrated written and oral skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner. • Successful supervision of students.

Preferred Qualifications: • Expertise in machine vision techniques and image processing. • Expertise in machine learning concepts.

Salary: The full-time annual salary will be $73,800 - $77,700.
