Position Description:    

The University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science invites applications for the position of Department Head of Petroleum Engineering. Applicants must be qualified for an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure. Candidates from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. This position has recently received a new $5M endowment, known as the Le Norman Endowed Leadership Chair in Petroleum Engineering, and includes an excellence fund, known as the Le Norman Family Excellence Fund in Petroleum Engineering.

 The College seeks a highly motivated and accomplished leader to oversee world-class research and educational programs, provide strategic vision and planning, promote cultural and gender diversity, and guide the Department of Petroleum Engineering to the next level of excellence as it increases the number of graduating students, expands its facilities, and hires new faculty. 

 The department has a vibrant and growing ABET-accredited undergraduate program with over 300 undergraduate students and offers masters and doctoral degrees with 50 graduate students currently enrolled. Current research emphases in the department include interfacial and pore-scale flow and transport phenomena in conventional and unconventional reservoirs, flow assurance, petroleum thermodynamics and phase behavior, carbon dioxide capture and utilization, carbon engineering and clean energy. Future topics of focus will include drilling, completions and well intervention as well as hydrocarbon production operations and facilities.

 The department benefits from the support of a state-funded Tier-1 Engineering Initiative to elevate the college to national prominence in education and research, and to enhance economic development in Wyoming. University, state, and industrial partners have invested over $250M to establish first-rate facilities, and a core of highly talented faculty and students in this effort. These include a $30M Energy Innovation Center, a $50M Enzi STEM Facility, a $60M High Bay Research Facility, and a new $110M Engineering Education and Research Building which is on track to open in September 2019. Faculty in the department work closely with the School of Energy Resources to promote interdisciplinary academic, research, and outreach programs, and build strong alliances with the energy industry.

 Duties of the position:

The new Department Head will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Lead the faculty and staff of a vibrant, growing department of strategic significance for Wyoming and the world
  • Implement strategic activities in concert with the college’s and university’s strategic plan and the Engineering Initiative
  •  Enhance the profile of the department nationally and internationally
  •  Engage industrial partners and government constituencies to strengthen the program
  •  Lead strategic efforts to grow the research enterprise in key target areas
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in his or her area of expertise

 Required qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Petroleum Engineering or a related field
  •  Demonstrated scholarly accomplishment in research in petroleum engineering or related fields in an academic or industry organization as evidenced by publications and citations in archival journals
  •  International recognition and record of achievement appropriate to merit a tenured position as Associate or Full Professor at the University of Wyoming
  •  Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, administrators and external constituents
  • Committed to excellence in teaching and research

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated capacity for academic leadership and administration
  • Experience in or with the energy or petroleum industry
  • Experience and effectiveness with development and fund raising
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines, colleges, and administrative structures.
