Position Description:

Provide technical support in a research program, performing a range of tasks related to genetic mapping and breeding in small grains. Responsible for routine lab tasks. Responsibilities include: DNA extractions, PCR, plate preparation for DNA sequencing, and maintain simple laboratory records. Greenhouse and field responsibilities include: planting seeds and crossing plants. Lab management responsibilities include: ordering supplies and equipment; maintaining stocks; advising undergraduates and graduate students in lab equipment usage and lab procedures; monitor lab safety and organization; provide quality assurance by verifying and validating data; schedule use of equipment and lab materials. Collect data and perform standard calculations; input, retrieve, and record experimental data using straightforward computer techniques and software. Clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment and overall laboratory hygiene including glassware sterilization.

Anticipated Division of Time: Lab work – 45% Ordering supplies and equipment; maintaining stocks; advising undergraduates, graduate students; training students and staff in lab equipment usage and lab procedures; maintain routine inventories and records; monitor lab safety and organization; 10%-provide quality assurance by verifying and validating data; 10%-prepare reports; schedule use of equipment and lab materials; Provide Quality assurance; Writing research papers.

Greenhouse and Field work- 30% Planting and maintaining populations, design and conduct cross pollinations, maintain seed, preparation of material for field evaluation, collection of data and samples, and carrying out greenhouse experiments.

Molecular Biology -15% - DNA extractions, PCR, plate preparation for DNA sequencing, routine use of standard software.

Data management – 10%

Requirements Phd is required. Lab safety training required. Basic computer knowledge including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and email is expected. Experience with lab and field plant research. Experience with standard computer software and laboratory practices. Biology, plant biotechnology or plant genetics education desirable.

Supervision Exercised List the functional supervision that will be exercised over support staff, as well as graduate and undergraduate students involved in research.
