Department Chair, SUNY Korea Mechanical Engineering

SUNY Korea invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MEC), starting February 2019. Founded in March 2012, SUNY Korea ( is a global campus of Stony Brook University (SBU) and the State University of New York, offering degree programs from SBU’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) and College of Business. SUNY Korea aims to provide its students with an American university experience in Korea with instruction in English. Its student body is international. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at SUNY Korea was founded in February 2015 and offers mechanical engineering degrees from BE to PhD. For undergraduate students, they are required to spend two semesters in their home department at SBU. The Department plans to seek ABET accreditation after the first group of students graduate from the program.

SUNY Korea is located at the Incheon Global Campus (IGC) in Songdo, South Korea, which is shared with a number of leading international universities. Songdo is a newly developed smart city in close proximity to the Incheon International Airport and about one hour from Seoul by car. Songdo International Business District is home to Korean and international high-tech firms.

Job Description The chair is expected to provide leadership toward the achievement of excellence in the teaching, research, and service activities of the department. The chair is responsible for the recruitment, selection, and evaluation of both the academic and the staff personnel of the department. The chair is responsible for facilitating the operation of the department in collaboration with Stony Brook University, especially with regard to ABET accreditation.

Qualifications • Experience within higher education in the USA, to include at least 3-4 years of experience in teaching or pursuing advanced studies in an American institution of higher education. Prior experience with ABET process is highly desirable. • Fluency in English is essential. • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related field. • Academic rank of a tenured faculty member, preferably at the level of full professor. • A record of scholarship in mechanical engineering. • Skilled at cross-cultural communication, with demonstrated enthusiasm for new experiences.
