Faculty Positions Available in Autonomy and Robotics

Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering University of Kentucky

The College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky seeks candidates for up to three tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor level in the areas of autonomy and robotics. Exceptional candidates at the associate professor level will also be considered. These faculty positions will be in the Department of Mechanical Engineering or the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering with joint appointments possible. This faculty search is focused on identifying highly qualified candidates with demonstrated expertise in autonomy or robotics, which may include but is not limited to applied robotics; machine learning for robotics; next-generation sensing, control, and communication systems; networked robotics; unmanned systems; and human-robot systems. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. The successful candidate will possess a strong record of research accomplishments and the capability to develop an active and nationally recognized research program.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has 34 tenured and tenure-track faculty and over 1,100 undergraduate and graduate students. Electrical & Computer Engineering has 25 tenure-track faculty and over 600 undergraduate and graduate students. These departments’ faculty members are engaged in federally funded research projects from agencies such as NSF; NIH; NASA; DOE; DOD; DARPA; NIST; and USDA. The departments also have research centers and consortiums that collaborate extensively with industry. Externally funded research in these departments exceeds $13 million/year in new awards.

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering’s research activities focus on the areas of power and energy; cybersecurity and embedded systems; computational electromagnetics; nanoscale technology; signal and image processing; and machine learning. The Department of Mechanical Engineering’s strategic plan focuses on the areas of aerospace engineering; autonomy, robotics, and controls; bioengineering; energy; and manufacturing. While this search is targeted at the areas of autonomy and robotics, candidates that can bridge multiple focus areas are encouraged to apply.
