Assistant or Associate Professor of Architecture 

The Architecture Section of the Knowlton School at The Ohio State University is seeking candidates at the Assistant or Associate level for a tenure-track position in architecture. We desire candidates who evidence a strong potential for making a significant contribution to design research through scholarship, creative design practices, or criticism and commentary; and for engendering enthusiasm in the classroom. 

The responsibilities of the position include general instructional duties at all levels of the curriculum, undergraduate and graduate, and in all classroom environments (studio, lecture, and seminar) as well as customary faculty committee and service assignments. All interested, qualified persons are encouraged to apply regardless of his or her topic of inquiry, and each application will receive full consideration. However, additional attention in the selection process will be given to those applications whose research, whether practical or speculative, address: 1. aspects of non-traditional issues in western architecture such as feminism, minority practices, LGBTQ theory or other under-represented viewpoints by means of revisionist histories, alternative design theories and/or a broader approaches to contemporary practices and their analyses; or, 2. innovative approaches to sustainability, scarce resource management, population growth, economics of materials and their distributions and/or related system concerns to the discipline, practice and profession of architecture. 

The position will begin in August 2019. 


All applicants must have a Master of Architecture degree, a PhD or an equivalent degree; professional and/or teaching experience is strongly encouraged, though not required. Applicants whose method of research is in areas of traditional scholarship are expected to hold a Ph.D. 

Preferred qualifications include: evidence of significant research/creative work; the ability to develop and teach courses that develop core skills and specialties in architectural design. The Knowlton School Housed in Mack Scogin/Merril Elam’s award-winning building on Ohio State University’s Columbus Campus, The Knowlton School of Architecture fosters a singular environment for innovative design research and critical inquiry. 

Operating within the College of Engineering, the Knowlton School’s three sections, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning enjoy the benefits of a large research institution including collaborative relationships with the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design. Architecture has approximately 300 students, 14 full-time and 20 auxiliary faculty members. An ongoing catalogue of special programs, including The Baumer Visiting Professorship, the LeFevre Emerging Practitioner Fellowship, and a renowned lecture series and gallery exhibitions series continuously refuel intellectual ferment of the Architecture Section; they are designed, it might be said, to make certain the section never sleeps! 

The section’s publications include the Source Books in Architecture series, now in its 20th Year. The region’s many cities provide a convenient variety of research opportunities for much of the School’s scholarship and design studios.
