POSITION SUMMARY 

Associate Research Scientists are highly motivated individuals with a strong background in one of the following fields: theoretical chemistry, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, theoretical condensed matter physics and theoretical materials science. Researchers with Ph.D.s in applied mathematics, statistics or computer science will typically have significant scientific publications in one or more of the areas of condensed matter physics, materials science and chemistry. Associate Research Scientists will develop concepts, algorithms and codes, and work to apply these to obtain new insights into the quantum-mechanical behavior of materials and molecules. Associate Research Scientists may develop their own research programs or work in collaboration with group leaders at the center. Reporting to Antoine Georges and Andrew Millis, these positions are based at the Simons Foundation in New York City.

Associate Research Scientists are typically appointed for an initial three-year period; the appointment may be renewed for up to another three years. Associate Research Scientists may be reviewed for promotion to a non-term-limited position as a research scientist.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research in a scientific area of relevance to the CCQ and/or develop and implement novel algorithms and codes needed for CCQ-related research
  • Publish research in refereed scientific and technical journals and present research at scientific conferences
  • Provide publicly available software for use by the scientific community
  • Support the public use of available software
  • Assist in the organization of CCQ-related workshops, conferences and group seminars
  • Supervise research conducted by Flatiron research fellows and graduate and undergraduate students from neighboring institutions
  • Mentor summer students and assist in the organization of summer programs
  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned or required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • Ph.D. in a related field
  • Experience
  • One to six years of postgraduate research experience in condensed matter physics, theoretical chemistry, materials science or another field of interest to the CCQ.
  • A record of excellence in scientific publication
