The astrophysics & cosmology group of the Physics Department at Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) in Paris is pleased to advertise a postdoctoral position starting in the fall of 2019 or earlier. We are looking for highly motivated candidates, with a background in cosmology, who are eager to develop independent research at the interface between cosmology, Galactic astrophysics and data science.

Our research group is internationally recognised for its expertise in the astrophysics of interstellar matter. Recently, several cosmologists have joined the group and we are developing interfaces between cosmology, Galactic astrophysics and data science. We are involved in the analysis of the Planck and LOFAR data, as well as the scientific preparation of Euclid, LiteBIRD and the SKA.

For this opening, we are particularly interested in investigating the following observables in cosmology, hindered by Galactic foregrounds: ▪ B-mode polarisation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) associated with primordial gravitational waves ▪ CMB spectral distortions ▪ 21cm line emission of neutral hydrogen from the epoch of reionization

The candidates are expected to contribute to at least one of these research topics. They will additionally have the opportunity of interacting and collaborating with researchers interested in diverse topics in physics as well as applied mathematics. These include theoretical high energy physics and gravitation, statistical physics and data science. Moreover, the broader environment of Paris provides several research groups in cosmology (e.g. at APC, IAP, IAS, CEA/IPhT in Saclay) to which the ENS group is closely connected.

The candidates must hold a PhD in astrophysics or physics. A special attention will be given to candidates who have a proven track record of independent research. The appointment is for two years with a possible extension to a third year. In addition to an internationally competitive salary, ENS provides full social benefits, an attractive travel allowance and access to national high performance computing facilities. Applications must be submitted through this website and should be received by February 1st, 2019.
