Position Overview:

The Ohio State University College of Engineering invites applications for the position of NetJets Chair of Aviation Modernization, an industry-supported tenure track position with rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor with tenure. Successful candidates in this position will have the opportunity to lead The Ohio State University aviation community, as the NetJets Chair and the Director of the Center for Aviation Studies, an interdisciplinary research and academic center within the College of Engineering.  In particular, a key focus of the NetJets Chair is contributing to the modernization of the United States National Airspace System through research focusing on implementation and optimization of NextGen technologies and policies including, but not limited to focus areas in systems engineering, data analytics, human factors, and safety. The incumbent will build further upon strong collaborations with faculty across the College of Engineering, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and other relevant colleges at Ohio State to actively participate in multidisciplinary teaching and research activities. The incumbent will work closely with the senior leadership of the Don Scott Airport (KOSU), to further the overall strategy for the airport as a learning, research and operation Ohio State campus for aviation and aerospace related activities. The incumbent will lead the planning and execution of strategic research initiatives in the area of aviation modernization and perform one or more of the following: teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Engineering; advise students; conduct research; contribute to scholarly publications; serve on departmental, college, and university committees; participate in professional organizations.   

Subject to the incumbent’s qualifications, a joint appointment will also be offered in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, to optimally link the technical and policy aspects that are critical to aviation in the United States, and globally.

Education and Experience Requirements:

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in aviation, or related engineering discipline, and have substantial experience in leading and managing large, technical, and/or complex organizations, and substantial experience in aerospace, aviation and/or air traffic research.  Experience across more than one the following domains - government, industry, and academia is preferred along with demonstrated excellence in flight operations, to include piloting, crew, maintenance, or other areas. In addition, established relationships with government organizations such as the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, DoD, and the aviation industry are desired.
