Position Description:

The Physics Department at Stanford University invites you to apply for a postdoctoral position in experimental particle physics with Assistant Professor Lauren Tompkins. The candidate will spend half of their time as a member of the IRIS-HEP institute working on innovative algorithm development for high energy physics, and the other half of their time on data analysis with the ATLAS experiment. IRIS-HEP ( is a new NSF-funded institute to address the data processing challenges of the High Luminosity LHC. The ATLAS experiment is one of four major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider which explores a diverse range of topics from Higgs Boson production to searches for dark matter and physics beyond the standard model.

In this position you will:

*Develop and assess charged particle reconstruction algorithms

*Analyze ATLAS data from Run II of the LHC

*Collaborate with members of the IRIS-HEP institute

*Publish research findings in journals and present at conferences

*Mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate level

For this position you need:

*A PhD in particle physics, astroparticle physics or related discipline

*Experience in at least one of: high-energy physics data analysis, pattern recognition algorithm development, high performance computing, software development, computing on alternative architectures (GPUs, FPGAs)

*To be proficient with computer programming in C++ and python.

*To be able to communicate effectively through documents and presentations

The most important qualifications are a demonstrated ability to tackle new problems and an eagerness to work collaboratively.

The Stanford group, led by Professor Lauren Tompkins, is deeply involved in hardware based track reconstruction as well as analyses of Higgs boson production, standard model QCD measurements and exotic dark matter searches. This position is to be based at the Stanford campus with occasional travel to CERN and elsewhere for meetings and collaboration.

Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted. Those received before June 1st will receive full consideration.
