The UrbanOccupationsOETR is a multi-disciplinary digital humanities project with an international team focusing on analysis of economic and demographic data. We are extracting, curating, and analysing data on economic and population geography for Southeast Europe and Anatolia. Our main data source is handwritten texts in Ottoman Turkish. We are looking for an expert to build a customised handwritten text recognition system for handwritten Ottoman Turkish. Although major advances have been made recently in Arabic OCR and other unsegmented HTR technologies, the decisive solution to the research problem for the Ottoman script has not yet been found. In our research project we offer the unique opportunity to be supported by a massive dataset created by manual data inputters to be used as control and test data. In the first three years of the project the team has entered personal identification and demographic data (name, physical appearance, family relation, occupation and ages) of around 150,000 persons with a relatively limited variance of data input. We aim to computerize and automatize this very iterative process via developing the first adaptive and custom-made Ottoman HTR and further develop it for other types of data sources, which has both historical and contemporary uses. Historical maps are another important data source, which we heavily use, therefore we are expecting to have a research fellow who could also help the team with automatized and customised feature extraction from historical maps using computer vision and machine learning techniques.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate holding a PhD Degree in a related field. The successful candidate should have strong analytical skills, is expected to be proactive, self-driven with strong problem-solving abilities and out-of-the-box thinking. Knowledge of proven advanced programming is required. We are expecting to publish our research outcomes at the highest scientific level and to develop international multi-disciplinary collaborations. The successful applicant should be able to work both individually with discipline and contribute to the teamwork.

The required criteria and documentation to apply for the position: • Proven accomplishment and having potential for further advancement in the field of data science • Excellent command in spoken and written English • A detailed motivation letter (max 3 pages) • Curriculum vitae (including detailed knowledge on skills and experience, max 3 pages) • Names of two possible referees
