Role Purpose 
This is a fantastic opportunity to work on several research projects applying your skills in health data science.

You will be based at the Health Informatics Centre (HIC) https://www.dundee.ac.uk/hic/ at the University of Dundee. HIC supports high impact research through the collection and active management of high-quality data in a secure environment with strong data governance, and its delivery to academics and other users, to improve healthcare and population health. HIC has a team of ~35 experts in data science, software development, health informatics, data linkage, data security and HPC.

This role needs specialist knowledge in data science, data visualisation, data analysis and ideally AI and machine learning. You will have the opportunity to co-author many academic publications across a range of projects and therefore an enjoyment of writing and learning is very important. This is an excellent opportunity to apply analytical skills and experience in health data science. As this role is working across a range of projects it would suit a highly driven individual with a desire to advance quickly as an academic within the field.

Location
The post holder will be based at HIC, Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, Dundee 

Principal duties
You will be working as a Health Data Scientist as part of the academic arm of HIC, focussed on delivery of major nationwide projects in collaboration with other universities, the NHS and industry partners.

Key aspects of this role:
  1. Undertake data analysis within the context of research projects, leading to research publications.
  2. Work with software developers and data analysts within HIC to shape the development of HIC’s suite of software products
  3. Contribute specialist phenomic data domain knowledge to the software development team.
  4. Working with a range of data types

You must be able to work independently, and to agreed deadlines. The candidate must feel comfortable taking ownership and driving key projects.  

You will be expected to learn the domain information required to deliver the projects. Such information could be health data, genomic data and image data. 

You will regularly be required to communicate clearly on complex and specialised issues both orally and in writing, sometimes to non-specialists. You will also be expected to contribute to public engagement, academic outreach and research publications. 

As part of an ISO27001 accredited organisation, you’ll be expected to keep abreast of data governance, the use of privacy enhancing technologies, trusted third parties, and other methods essential for the safe use of patient data.

Essential 
Qualifications & Education
A PhD together with academic publication record.
Experience: Several years’ experience using data analysis skills.
Experience of working and publishing in academia. 
Skills 
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to both technical staff and senior management. 
Experience of preparing academic papers for publication. 
An understanding of the state of the art in health data science. 
An understanding of phenomics.  
Personal Qualities 
A team player with the ability to work using own initiative, deliver outputs within agreed timeframes and work under pressure.  

Desirable 
A post doctorate in a related discipline such as Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics. Use of health data in a research context. 
Understanding of health data coding standards such as SNOMED-CT. 
Software design and development experience, in one of the standard tech stacks. 
Experience in AI / ML. 
Experience in algorithm development and training. 
Good skills in C++ / .NET. 
Good skills in Java tech stack. 
Good skills in Python. 
Good skills with stats packages: MATLAB, R, SAS. 
Good database skills. 
An understanding of clinical trials. 
An understanding of the use of observational data for research. 
An understanding of large international initiatives in this field. 
An understanding of data federation and different methods for secure processing of sensitive health data. Understanding of genomic data processing.
