The Department of Design and Environmental Analysis (D+EA) at Cornell University is a multi-disciplinary department composed of designers, environmental psychologists, and human factors researchers deeply committed to enhancing quality of life through human-centered design and research.  D+EA addresses problems and opportunities from a systems perspective – people, products, processes and places – to create innovative, strategic, sustainable, and healthy settings.  D+EA is dedicated to maintaining a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, communication, and respect. D+EA seeks to hire a Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor (start date of July 1, 2020).

The position is 50% research / 50% teaching. D+EA values excellence in teaching.  We seek applicants who will contribute to both undergraduate and graduate teaching.  We are particularly interested in people who can teach undergraduate design studio, programming, sustainability, environmental psychology, and human factors / ergonomics.

Applicants’ areas of design and behavior research expertise might include:

  • Vulnerable Populations – examining design and its impact on particular under served groups such as children, older adults, culturally and economically diverse individuals, and those with varying abilities.
  • Living, Learning and Working Environments – examining the design and impact of educational, workplace, and residential settings.

New tenure-track Assistant/ Associate professors are expected to develop an externally-funded research program of international distinction. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses based on department needs, advising our B.S., M.A., M.S., and PhD students, and providing service to the department and university community.  Preference is given to applicants with a completed Ph.D.  Preference is given to applicants who have degrees in design (particularly interior design) as well as the social sciences.
