Research Associate in Holographic Spacetime University of Cambridge Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Salary: £32,816 p.a. - £40,322 p.a.

A position exists for a postdoctoral research associate in the research group of Dr Aron C Wall. The position will involve using tools from high energy physics, quantum gravity, and/or quantum information theory in order to better understand the holographic principle.

The candidate will be based at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) of the University of Cambridge.

Candidates should either have, or be about to receive, a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, or a closely related field.

The position will start on or before 1 October 2020.

This project is funded by the (United States) Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) grant "Tensor Networks and Holographic Spacetime".

Goals of the project include finding a local (bulk) formulation of the holographic principle, extending tensor network models of holography to dynamical and cosmological situations, and studying holographic entanglement entropy and reconstruction of spacetime regions in AdS/CFT.

Duties of the position involve the ability to pursue an original research programme both independently and in collaboration with others, and to disseminate the results of this work by submitting articles to the arXiv and giving academic seminars both at Cambridge and abroad.

The role holder will be expected to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. You may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects and the development of student research skills. The position includes access to at least $5000 (US dollars) of travel expenses each year.

In addition to collaborations at DAMTP, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in an affiliated international collaboration led by Dr Xi Dong and Professor Donald Marolf (UC Santa Barbara), Dr Tom Faulkner (UI Urbana-Champaign), Professor Daniel Harlow (MIT), Professor Patrick Hayden (Stanford), Professor John Preskill (Caltech), and Dr Brian Swingle (U Maryland), who are supported by the MURI grant "Quantum Codes, Tensor Networks, and Quantum Spacetime".
