Position Description:

As a result of the ever increasing importance of engineering science to society and of a strategic commitment to innovation and leadership in engineering science, technology and education, the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE, http://maeweb.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California San Diego (http://ucsd.edu) invite applications for six (6) Assistant Professor (tenure-track) positions in the MAE department.

JPF02316 - Broad Excellence Search https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF02316 The MAE department and the University of California, San Diego are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body. We therefore invite applications for an Excellence search at the Assistant Professor (tenure-track) level from candidates in all areas within Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. In addition to the highest standards of scholarship, teaching, and professional activity, the successful candidate(s) for this position will have potential or demonstrated contributions to promote a climate that supports equity, inclusion, and diversity.

JPF02296 - Biomechanics https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF02296 The MAE department seeks candidates in the areas of biomechanics and mechanobiology, who are pursuing innovative interdisciplinary research in the application of fluid and/or solid mechanics to the solution of biological and biomedical problems. Systems of interest range from the cellular level to the tissue and organ levels, with a focus on mechanobiology including the mechanics of soft matter. We welcome applicants with expertise in experiments, computation, or theory. Successful candidates will be expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment in the department and across the university campus.

JPF02298 - Space Systems https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF02298 The MAE department seeks candidates in all areas of Aerospace Engineering, with preference for candidates with interests in space-based science and technologies and associated applications. Research areas of particular interest include low-cost and/or reusable launch systems technologies; emerging spacecraft propulsion or thermal systems; novel sensor or control systems; small, micro, and nanosatellites; spacecraft, vehicle and mission design; satellite constellation design and control; and life extension using new small attachable satellites to provide fresh power or upgraded electronics to existing satellites.

JPF02317 - Energy Systems https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF02317 The MAE department seeks candidates who are pursuing innovative interdisciplinary research in the technology and systems challenges of deep decarbonization of the energy system. Example areas include but are not limited to electric grid operation with high penetration levels of renewable energy and storage (stochastic optimal load flow and unit commitment, state estimation); engineering aspects of systems-level solutions such as forecasting, energy storage, and demand response (e.g. coordination of distributed energy resources, learning theory, data analytics); engineering strategies for flexible thermo-electric systems (e.g. power plant flexibility, long-duration thermal storage), development and deployment of carbon capture and sequestration or direct air capture of CO2. We are particularly interested in candidates whose interests cover multiple technologies and their local or global impacts in connection to complex energy systems as opposed to candidates whose research is focused on energy policy.

JPF02315 - Systems Engineering https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF02315 The MAE department seeks candidates in the area of Systems Engineering, including model-based systems engineering, full lifecycle simulation and modeling, verification and validation, uncertainty management, digital twining and digital threading, orchestration, data-driven control and design optimization, and machine learning & artificial intelligence in engineering design. We seek candidates whose systems engineering research is interdisciplinary and applicable to transportation systems, energy systems, manufacturing systems, biomedical systems, and other domains of science and technology.

JPF02318 - Mechanics of Materials https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF02318 The MAE department seeks candidates in the area of computational mechanics of materials. We seek candidates who are pursuing innovative interdisciplinary research focused on multiscale computational design of materials, which may involve, but is not limited to, topics such as functional materials and materials in extreme environments (e.g. severe temperature, strain rate, stress, chemical, or irradiative conditions). The use of approaches incorporating atomistic, kinetic, and continuum models complemented by data science or machine learning are also of interest.

Required job duties include developing a successful research program, teaching university students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and excel in service activities. As such, successful faculty candidates will demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity in their research areas. In addition, successful candidates must be committed to increasing diversity and inclusion and have a desire to participate in the School's diversity initiatives.

A Ph.D. degree in Engineering or in a related discipline is required at the time of application for all positions.

We especially welcome candidates who have contributed to programs that increase the access and success of underrepresented students or faculty in engineering and who are committed to, and experienced in, building an excellent and diverse academic environment. Rank of position is at the Assistant Professor level.

Salary: Level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications; salary based on UC pay scales and market conditions.

Closing Date: Please refer to each recruitment posting to determine the closing date. These positions will remain open until filled. Applications received after this date will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. To Apply: Please submit a cover letter, current curriculum vitae with complete publication list and names of three references, a statement of research and teaching interests, a separate statement describing past experience in activities that promote diversity and inclusion and/or plans to make future contributions.

Applicants should summarize their past or potential contributions to diversity. See our Faculty Equity site and Divisional Guidelines for more information.
