Organization Overview A primary research focus of the Brookhaven Physics Department is the exploration of hot and cold QCD using the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The PHENIX Group in the BNL Physics Department plays a central role in the sPHENIX experiment at RHIC, which is under construction and plans to commence data-taking in 2023. The group also plays a strong role in developing the sPHENIX physics program, with particular emphasis on jets, photons, heavy flavor, and quarkonia.

Position Description The Physics Department has an opening for a two-year term Research Associate. The selected candidate will work closely with scientists in the PHENIX group to help develop online software — including simulation, real time computing, databases, monitoring, and data acquisition — and prepare for the commissioning of the sPHENIX experiment. The successful candidate could also take a significant role in existing research activities in which the group has a strong presence, such as physics analyses with existing data from ATLAS at the LHC on topics relevant to the sPHENIX physics program, and EIC detector R&D.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Online software development for the sPHENIX experiment • Develop physics analysis strategies using innovative analysis methodologies (e.g. jet substructure or flavor tagging, perhaps using machine learning approaches) for sPHENIX based on existing collider data, such as ATLAS at the LHC. • Collaborate with scientists on publishing research findings in leading journals

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Ph.D. in Particle or Nuclear Physics • Experience with data analysis techniques • Experience in experimental particle and high-energy nuclear physics

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Knowledge in C++, ROOT, and GEANT programming Other Information • Requires travel, including foreign travel. • Initial two-year position. • BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
