The Stanford EV50 program is looking to hire a highly motivated and creative software professional who will lead the design and implementation of EON and its cloud-based control plane. The individual will play an important leadership role in building the EV50 exemplar infrastructure and open source platforms for the community in collaboration with a great team of students and other software developers and will also work with the larger interdisciplinary EV50 team at Stanford. The role is essentially a hands-on software development role creating software for others in the community to use and build on. The goal is to build a marketable product, not a throwaway research prototype.

Stanford's interdisciplinary EV50 Program aims to enable a world with at least 50% electric vehicles (EV), mostly powered by renewable energy, offering lot of space, time, and cost choices to EV owners with innovative business models for the key stakeholders. The Stanford EV50 program is pursuing many technological and business innovations to help realize this vision. The key innovations and areas of research include programmable energy devices including a unique energy storage and gateway, an EV50 Overlay Network (EON), cloud based control plane for the EON, data driven learning and forecasting, AI and ML based algorithms and applications for network optimizations and pricing with the goal to enable new business models with incentives to various stakeholders and lot of choice to end users. The Stanford EV50 program is building an exemplar infrastructure and open source platforms and applications on campus that others in industry and academia can replicate and build on.

A software defined EV50 Overlay Network (EON) and its cloud-based control plane will be an important infrastructure to enable this vision. The EON comprises programmable DERs and storage and gateway devices that serve both as energy shock absorbers to protect transmission and distribution networks from peaks of load due to EV charging and peaks of energy generation by DERS and also serve as the buffers for time and space convenient energy dispensing to EVs. The cloud based control plane for the EON (1) maintains up to date state of the overlay network and presents simple to use and program abstractions of the network and devices to applications for data-driven learning and forecasting, network optimizations and pricing and (2) allows these applications to programmatically configure and control underlying network of devices to achieve the results of operator policies and optimizations and at the same time offer convenience and choice to EV users.

A successful candidate for the position must have the following qualifications: experience in architecting and building complex software systems motivation to learn about energy and EV infrastructure strong interest in both architecting and actually writing high quality software that others can use and build on. ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team of strong and creative faculty, students and other software developers Successful candidate for this position may also possess the following qualifications that will make the candidacy stronger: experience (1) building control plane for the software defined networks (2) building cloud native software experience with energy and EV infrastructure, services and apps experience with the state-of-the-art software tool chain for creating open source software: Gerrit, Jenkins, Jira, Github, EC2 instances and so on.
