The University of Connecticut seeks a dynamic leader to serve as Department Head of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS).  The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Professor and will be expected to lead the SLHS Department by strengthening the academic and professional success of its faculty, students, and staff, and developing its diverse, vibrant, and inclusive intellectual community. The head guides the Department’s commitment to teaching, research, and service and builds connections between the Department and the College and University.

The missions of the SLHS department are to educate students about the processes of hearing, speech, language, cognition, and swallowing, to engage in the scientific study of human communication and its disorders, and to serve the community of individuals with communication disorders or differences. The SLHS Department offers CAA-accredited graduate training programs in audiology and speech language pathology.  It is home to the UConn Speech and Hearing Clinic, a full-service health care facility offering audiology and speech language pathology services to the community, from infants to adults.  The Department is a key contributor to the UConn Cognitive Sciences Program and the Institute for Brain and Cognitive Sciences. It is also a participating department in interdisciplinary graduate training programs funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and various foundations and industry partners.  Department faculty are involved in interdisciplinary research with the Brain Imaging Research Center on the Storrs campus and collaborate with external partners including Haskins Laboratory in New Haven, CT and the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory in Groton, CT. 

Applicants are expected to demonstrate effective leadership in a diverse community of faculty colleagues, students, and staff by fostering inclusion and equity, developing faculty and student scholarship, and advancing innovative programming and professional opportunities. The head will be an articulate and vigorous spokesperson and advocate for the department’s scientific, clinical, translational, and educational missions.

The successful candidate for this position will have a Ph.D. or Sc.D. in SLHS or a related field; an active, distinguished record of research including external grant support for research, clinical, or educational activities; significant and widespread recognition in their field; strong written and oral communication skills; a proven record of excellence in teaching; evidence of relevant administrative experience through leadership positions in academia or their discipline; evidence of ability to foster a collegial working atmosphere; and evidence of service to the field or profession.


Clinical certification by the American Speech, Language, Hearing Association (CCC-A, CCC-SLP). Experience or facility with diversity and equity in the profession, such as recruitment and retention of minority and women scholars, outreach to under-represented student and scholarly communities, mentorship of faculty and graduate students, and incorporation of diverse subjects and approaches into pedagogy and scholarship.


This is a full time, 10 month tenured/tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2020.  The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
