Staff Scientist at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS)

The Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) is a high-intensity x-ray source which provides users state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation facilities for research in physics, chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, materials science, cultural heritage, and engineering. CHESS is seeking a staff scientist (Research Associate) to support the scientific community performing high impact research on the Forming and Shaping Technologies (FAST) beamline which is part of the NSF supported Center for High Energy X-ray Sciences (CHEXS).

Responsibilities:

+ Attract and support an active user community employing x-ray techniques to characterize materials properties

+ Foster productive scientific collaborations with the diverse CHESS user community

+ Creatively contribute to the development of new synchrotron methods and techniques.

+ Communicate research results obtained in collaboration with users through publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences.

Essential Qualifications:

+ Ph.D. or equivalent in materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related field and 2 years post-PhD experience

+ Interest and ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment

+ Record of impactful scientific publications

+ Ability to communicate effectively with technical experts and researchers at all levels, including students and facility users

+ Proficiency in science communication, written and oral, formal and informal.

The initial appointment is for two years and can be renewed based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
