The University of Massachusetts Medical School is a vibrant and collaborative environment, providing outstanding medical education to 162 students per year. Under the Learner-centered Integrated Curriculum, students experience seamless education across the pre-clinical and clinical years. We are seeking a Medical Educator to fill a non-tenured track full-time position for teaching Physiology. Candidates with a PhD (or equivalent) will be considered. The successful candidate will work with a team of medical educators to teach Physiology in a an integrated development, structure, and function (DSF) course. Future opportunities might include serving as the director for the Physiology component of our soon-to-ensue fully integrated one-pass curriculum. While not required for this position, candidates with the ability to teach in other areas in basic biomedical sciences will be considered as an advantage. The DSF course provides first-year medical students with a basis of understanding how the normal human body is built and how it functions. This 5-month, ~300 contact hour course, runs from the end of September through the end of February, and integrates disciplines of human embryology, physiology, histology, anatomy, and clinical imaging. DSF focuses on a study of normal development, structure, and function and emphasizes the relationship between structure and function at the cellular, tissue, organ, and whole organism levels. Specific responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to): • Preparing and delivering lectures for several of the component “units” of DSF; e.g. Respiratory, Cardiovascular, GI, etc. • Developing and employing multiple teaching methods including case-based instruction, large and small group discussions, and simulation • Working with DSF co-leaders to determine optimal pedagogies (lectures, flipped learning, conferences, audience-response sessions, team-based learning, problem-based learning, etc.) to deliver content • Promoting critical thinking skills in learner-centered activities, giving students a chance to engage with and interpret information • Providing formative and summative assessment and feedback for medical student performance • Providing individual support and advice to medical students • Working in close collaboration with other DSF co-course directors to develop clinical correlations that integrate across basic science disciplines • Working in close collaboration with the course and curriculum committees, faculty, and administrators to accomplish the goals and objectives of the medical school • Engaging in medical education scholarship In addition, the successful candidate should indicate a strong interest in integrative, multidisciplinary medical education and will be expected to actively pursue new approaches to enhance the school’s integrated curriculum; examples of which include: • Experiences in crafting and monitoring medical student milestones • Uses of simulation and other technology to support teaching, development of new curricular components and educational materials, and implementation of new methods for student assessment. Applicants will have available the full resources of our iCELS (interprofessional Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation) • Developing curricular materials to be used for self-directed remote learning • Expansion of interprofessional collaboration • Mentoring students in capstone projects We are seeking a candidate with strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills who has demonstrated success as an educator. The applicant should show evidence of engagement and productivity in the scholarship of teaching by dissemination of their work through peer-reviewed publications or presentations, and by involvement in regional and national level organizations. There are numerous opportunities for research in areas of clinical and basic science interest, as well as opportunities for research in the process of medical education.
