Structural Materials and Mechanics Postdoctoral Associates at CHESS

The Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) has two openings for postdoctoral researchers to join our scientific team to study the processing, properties and performance of engineering alloys using tool such as high energy x-ray diffraction (HEXD) and crystal-based finite element (FE) simulations. The successful candidate will leverage X-ray data to advance the field of structural materials and/or creatively contribute to the development of synchrotron methods and techniques. The Materials Solutions Network at CHESS (MSN-C) is a sub-facility at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source dedicated to improving the performance and safety of both new and existing materials, supporting materials research efforts for the Air Force and other Department of Defense facilities, and original equipment manufacturers. The structural materials program at MSN-C is actively working to mature academic, multi-modal characterization techniques (including EM and HEXD) and modeling efforts into robust, engineering tools. In addition to those with X-ray experience, we encourage applicants with backgrounds that complement our X-ray programs to apply, such as electron and neutron scattering, deformation modeling, and data-intensive research strategies. Research areas of particular interest include fatigue and plasticity of structural alloys.

We seek candidates with experience in mechanics and microstructures of structural materials, HEXD, electron microscopy, and/or a strong familiarity with FE modeling. A PhD in mechanical/structural engineering or materials science is preferred; a Ph.D. in other relevant physical sciences will also be considered. Successful candidates should expect to work on interdisciplinary teams as well as pursue a personal research program developing next generation characterization experiments, data collection algorithms, and/or advanced materials models. A solid publication record, fluency in the English language, and excellent communication skills are essential. Proficiency with scientific software (Python, C, SPEC, MATLAB, etc.) and experience with high performance computing are desired. Previous industrial interactions are also important. All positions have the opportunity to work with a diverse team of scientists beyond those at CHESS; specific affiliations (position dependent) include Department of Defense Laboratories, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center. This is a yearly appointment, but will be renewed annually (maximum of five years) based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
