The Georgia Institute of Technology invites applicants from exceptional senior candidates working at the intersection of electronics and materials for the endowed position of the Joseph M. Pettit Chair and Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) Eminent Scholar. The position is expected to be a joint appointment at the rank of Full Professor in the School of Materials Science of Engineering and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of interdisciplinary collaborative research in the synthesis, processing, properties and applications of electronic and related functional materials including, but not limited to, advanced materials and processes to form next generation electronics packaging components, novel materials for CMOS and beyond, nanoscale electronic materials, quantum materials, and materials for power electronics.

The School of Materials Science and Engineering has ~35 full time equivalent faculty whose research spans all forms, classes, and functionalities of materials to address various societal grand challenges. The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the largest producers of electrical engineers and computer engineers in the United States. Almost 2,600 students are enrolled in the School’s graduate and undergraduate programs, and in the last academic year, 801 degrees were awarded. Both MSE and ECE undergraduate and graduate programs are in the top ten of the most recent college rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

There is a substantial opportunity to interact with Georgia Tech’s Packaging Research Center (PRC), which encompasses a highly interdisciplinary team of faculty, staff and students spanning fundamental and applied research in advanced materials and processes to enable next generation systems and demonstration of advanced system prototype modules for applications in computing, wireless communication, high-power and high-temperature electronics, and sensing. Opportunities also abound for campus-wide interactions within the academic units in the Colleges of Science, Engineering, and Computing, and GT’s interdisciplinary research institutes (IRIs) including the Institute of Electronics and Nanotechnology (IEN), the Institute for Materials (IMat), and the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). The IRIs provide thought leadership, facilitate collaborative research across various academic units, and assist with ideation, proposal preparation, student and faculty socialization and sharing of resources. All faculty have access to state-of-the-art shared user facilities including the IEN Nanofabrication Facility, and the IEN/IMat Materials Characterization Facility.

Successful candidates will be senior faculty with a demonstrated capability to lead a highly impactful and translational research program; provide outstanding mentorship to trainees and junior faculty; and enrich and engage in a collegial departmental environment. Candidates must have an internationally recognized track record of research development and funding, and be eligible for appointment as a full professor with tenure to continue their leadership in contemporary engineering and innovation. Successful candidates will be expected to sustain a vibrant externally-funded research program and to participate in teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students.
