University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a Lead Laboratory Animal Research Specialist. The Translational Therapeutic Research Group (TTRG) with the UMB's Department of Neurosurgery and Greenebaum Cancer Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore is seeking a Lead Laboratory Animal Research Specialist. This established position within the TTRG is responsible for animal husbandry and protocols, brain tumor modeling using a novel transgenic rodent line, and general lab procedures and management.

Responsibilities will include performing animal research activities and animal clinical care in a laboratory setting with a variety of species mainly rodents. All work is performed in accordance with animal welfare regulations, USDA, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Services (PHS), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Association for assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The ideal candidate will elevate and enhance the TTRG by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts. Strong communications skills and the ability to work on ambiguous matters generally without precedent or structure and independently develop standardization and protocols are preferred. Key concepts for this position include:

Resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking. Contributes to development and evaluation of goals and objectives. Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance. May supervise, mentor, or coordinate work of others (positions that supervise are responsible for service delivery, quality assurance, and employee performance). May independently manage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources. Animal Husbandry and Protocol Functions as a single specialist in a laboratory setting, is responsible for providing high-level technical expertise to research project(s), and must follow and complete advanced pathways to provide an animal ‘whole body care’ as it applies to the area of specialty to achieve this job title. Ensures design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. Performs laboratory animal (mice and rats) support activities such as surgical, anesthesia, enrichment, diagnostics, good laboratory practice, internal-medical and biohazardous research and may contribute advanced support to the design of related activities. Animal handling and general health monitoring, stereotactic surgery, tumor passaging, IV/IP/SC injections, animal breeding and genotyping, etc Manages brain tumor models and transgenic colonies. Independently perform laboratory maintenance and laboratory research activities required by the study(s). Lead the development and execution of project research studies. Perform procedures utilizing specific skillsets or advanced treatments as dictated by the veterinarian in charge. Revise studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards. Assemble and assist with project reports, literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software (Word, Excel, Endnote, Powerpoint, GraphPad) applications. Present research findings. Prepare material for journal articles and grant proposals. Lab Management and Organization Provide day-to-day laboratory operations oversight including monitoring and/or advising on project budgets, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures; ordering supplies general housekeeping; daily observations of animal health; collection of cultures and biological specimens for diagnostic testing and monitoring of animal health; diagnostic molecular (ELISA), bacteriological, or biological assays; breeding colonization processes; executing biochemical or hematopoietic procedures such as: bone marrow aspirations, complete blood count, white cell differential, electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, PCR and DNA extractions, etc. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implements effective solutions. Perform directorial duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; develops policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies Maintain the IACUC protocols (surgical documents, procedural forms, inspection reports), animal ordering and colony numbers, personnel documentation and training. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor's and/or advanced degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, biochemistry, chemistry, neuroscience, or field of study related to the animal sciences. Experience: Five (5) years of experience working with animals in a research laboratory setting or in an animal hospital, including three (3) years in the relevant research specialization. Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.


Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.
