What You Will Do:

  • Participate in the Neutrino Program of the Nuclear Science Division in the preparation and commissioning of the LEGEND-200 experiment that is currently under construction.

  • Serve as the lead in developing the background mitigation plan through experimentation of a high purity germanium detector in liquid argon.

  • Serve as the lead in developing software and implementing innovative approaches to identify the low-energy background in high purity germanium detectors operating in liquid argon.

  • Participate in the construction and commissioning of LBNL NSD deliverables to the LEGEND experiment and other associated Neutrino Program tasks.

  • Participate in the operational and analysis activities associated with the KATRIN neutrino mass measurement.

  • Independently solve complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and advanced scientific principles.

  • Publish papers/reports and make oral presentations of your own work.

  • May provide oversight to students, engineers, and technicians.

What Is Required:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in nuclear physics or physics.

  • Experience in research in neutrino and in other low-background underground experiments (e.g. dark matter).

  • Experience in research in radioactive backgrounds associated with liquid argon.

  • Experience in Bayesian-based nuclear and/or particle physics analyses.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, evaluate and organize large quantities of data in a timely manner, with very careful attention to detail.

  • Experience in conducting nuclear physics research.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a research environment and prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and scientific meetings.

Learn About Us:

Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

The Nuclear Science (NS) Division conducts basic research aimed at understanding the structure and interactions of nuclei and the forces of nature as manifested in the nuclear matter – topics that align the Division with the national program as elucidated in the 2007 U.S. Nuclear Science Long Range Plan.
