The Group of Prof. Karen Alim at the TUM Campus Garching investigates how flow networks self-organize their architecture within its newly acquired ERC FlowMem. We are looking for a Post-doc (m/f/d) to join our team at the TUM in October. 

Your Task

Porous media underlie broad applications in material science, filtration and, of outmost societal concern, energy conversion in fuel cells. Mass transfer in their tubular pore space network is fundamentally limited by the power law distribution of flow velocities resulting in trapping of reagents in regions of low flow velocity. Inspired by life’s capacity to self-optimize transport networks like our vasculature, we want to build porous media of materials that can change their morphology in response to reagents transported by flow. You will devise theoretical models of responsive porous media to identify kinetic rates and flow scales that allow the pore space to self-optimize for maximal flow rate. You will implement your predictions in microfluidic devices built out of responsive hydrogels. You will thereby predict entirely novel non-equilibrium dynamics of how flows and network morphology interact and thereby revolutionize technologies for the future. Working in an international, interdisciplinary team, you may also either focus on theory or experiment only.


As a suitable candidate you have a completed a doctoral thesis in physics, applied mathematics or related disciplines. As an experimental candidate you have experience in soft matter systems and ideally in quantitative data analysis. As a theoretical candidate, you have knowledge in soft matter/complex systems physics or statistical physics. You enjoy working in interdisciplinary and international teams and have programming skills. In addition, you are able to express yourself confidently both orally and in writing in English.

We offer a three-year contract with the possibility of renewal (TV-L E13 100%) in a highly motivated team combing on equal footing experimental and theoretical research.
