The Dean of the Social Sciences at Duke University invites applications for a one-year residential postdoctoral fellowship focused on race and sports. The fellow will be appointed in one of four departments: Cultural Anthropology; African and African American Studies; Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies; or Education. The fellow will help to imagine and facilitate a year-long series of events on the racial dynamics and body politics of Duke sports, including the school's well-known basketball team (the Duke faculty members leading the series are Jennifer Nash (Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies), Mark Anthony Neal (African and African American Studies), Martin Smith (Education), and Orin Starn (Cultural Anthropology). This will entail assisting in a series of projects: a semester-long class; a series of interviews and podcasts; and activities centering on current college athletes. These duties will take roughly half the fellow's time, with the other half left open for the fellow’s research. The fellow will receive full support for making connections with other scholars and joining campus intellectual life. 

We welcome a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, although candidates should have expertise in some combination of critical race studies, gender and sexuality studies, American and/or African American studies, southern history, and/or sports studies. 

The fellowship runs from July 2021 through June 2022, with full benefits and salary commensurate with experience. Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. by June 2021 to be eligible, and be no more than three years past the PhD.
