Visiting Assistant Professor: Environmental Economics or Development Economics Harvey Mudd College

The Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (HSA) at Harvey Mudd College—a highly selective member of the Claremont Colleges, offering majors in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics—seeks applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Development Economics or Environmental Economics. The nine-month full-time position runs from August 15, 2021 to June 30, 2022.

The primary qualification is a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates and demonstrated excellence and innovation in the classroom. The successful candidate will teach a total of five semester-long courses – two in the fall and three in the spring – including at least one introductory microeconomics or macroeconomics course and four other courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise in consultation with the department.

Development economics: Course topics might include global poverty, economic growth, agriculture, trade policy, rural development, microfinance, international finance, economic institutions, or political economy.

Environmental economics: Course topics could include the economics of energy, natural resources and the environment, climate change mitigation, market-based regulatory tools, land use, REDD+, property rights, inter-generational equity, or other themes.

The ideal candidate will have already designed and taught at least two distinct courses as the faculty instructor of record. A Ph.D. in economics must be completed by June 1, 2021.

The HSA Department offers a broad-based liberal arts program with considerable interaction among faculty representing about fourteen disciplines. We do not have an economics department or economics majors, although there are ample opportunities for interaction with economics faculty and students from the other Claremont Colleges, which are a short walking distance from the Harvey Mudd campus.

We are located in Claremont, California, 35 miles east of Los Angeles, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. This position includes health and retirement benefits and up to $2,000 in relocation costs.

The high caliber of Harvey Mudd students is one of the defining features of the college. In 2019, the acceptance rate was 14 percent, and the average SAT scores of admitted students commonly rank within the top ten among US universities. Harvey Mudd ranks second among the nation's universities for the highest percentage of graduates subsequently earning science and engineering doctorates.

Harvey Mudd College is committed to fostering diversity in its faculty, staff, and student body. We welcome applications from scholars from a wide variety of backgrounds including those typically underrepresented in college faculties.

Applications must be received by April 30, 2021. We will conduct interviews via video conference with a short list of finalists and intend to make a hiring decision by May 15. Applicants should submit a cover letter describing the courses they would like to teach, a curriculum vitae, three reference letters, and three syllabi and course evaluations (if available) from past courses they have designed and taught.

Questions may be addressed to the chair of the hiring committee, delaet@g.hmc.edu.
