The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences invites applications for non-tenure-track Associate Professor of the Practice and Clinical Assistant Professor positions beginning as soon as May 1, 2021. Qualifications required of all applicants include extensive experience commensurate with a PhD degree or equivalent in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and to curricular development that is informed by contemporary, real-world experience in an academic or industrial setting.

Founded in 2019, the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) is a university-wide, degree-granting academic unit comprising scholars and researchers in core and applied areas of computing, computational, and data-driven inquiry. The Faculty will be housed in an iconic 19-story building with a convention-bending design inside and out at the heart of the BU Campus. Additional information about the Faculty is available at https://www.bu.edu/cds. Starting in the fall of 2021, CDS will be launching its signature undergraduate BS degree program in Data Science. Successful candidates will play a major role in the roll out of this program, including development of course sequences that serve as gateways into the program, visioning and supporting experiential learning curricula that build towards students’ capstone experiences, as well as taking on leadership roles in advising, in mentorship, and in the development of the instructional infrastructure for CDS.

The successful candidate will carry out a workload equivalent to teaching five introductory or intermediate undergraduate courses covering foundational and core data science subjects, including programming and software engineering, data structures and algorithms, and the mathematical underpinnings of data mining and machine learning. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications, student advising and supervision of undergraduate capstone projects may substitute for teaching assignments.

Particular attention will be given to candidates with a record of pedagogical innovation in undergraduate education in topics that are relevant to data science, including software engineering; computational statistics; data engineering, management, and mining; machine learning; and AI.

Boston University expects excellence in teaching and in research and is committed to building a culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse scholarly community, which is essential to its mission as expressed at https://www.bu.edu/info/about/diversity. Application materials include current curriculum vitae, a statement summarizing teaching and pedagogical innovation interests, and at least three letters of references. Recent PhD graduates with a strong portfolio of teaching at the undergraduate level as well as computing and data science practitioners with a passion for bringing their expertise to bear on curricular offerings are encouraged to apply.
