Lecturer, Program in Deaf Studies Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development
ASL version of this announcement can be found here. The Program in Deaf Studies, situated within the Language and Literacy Department at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development, invites applications for a Lecturer, with a start date of July 1st, 2021. The candidate will be responsible for teaching a range of American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies courses to undergraduate and graduate students, contributing to the College’s commitment to equity, social justice, and antiracism, and to the curriculum design of our Deaf Studies and Deaf Education programs.
The Program in Deaf Studies affords students the opportunity to develop insights into, and genuine appreciation for the culture, contributions, and contemporary issues related to Deaf communities. Our Deaf Education program is built on the belief that all deaf children deserve access to a sign language like ASL as a first language, and is guided by a bilingual education philosophy. We offer an undergraduate major and minor in Deaf Studies, a Master’s degree in Deaf Education with preparation for teacher licensure, as well as Master’s and doctoral programs in Language and Literacy Education with an emphasis in ASL and Deaf Studies.
All of our courses are taught in ASL. Faculty engage in teaching, research, creative work, and partnerships with schools and Deaf communities. The Program in Deaf Studies also hosts events for students and for the broader community throughout the year. The program occupies an identified space in the Department, where all communication is in ASL. Also housed in this space is a professional filming studio and a team of outstanding interpreters who hold on-call hours 40 hours a week. Qualifications: Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Sign Language Education or a closely related field (e.g. ASL Linguistics, Deaf Studies). ASL Teachers Association (ASLTA) certification is preferred. Candidates must have native or near-native ASL proficiency, and at least three years of experience teaching at the college level. Experience teaching and engaging in work related to social justice in Deaf communities is strongly preferred.
