Two Faculty Positions in Anatomic Pathology

Department of Biomedical Sciences

College of Veterinary Medicine

Cornell University

Ithaca, NY

The Department of Biomedical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University invites applications for two faculty positions, clinical or tenure track, in the Section of Anatomic Pathology.  These individuals will join a group of seven ACVP-boarded pathologists whose goals include providing outstanding diagnostic services (necropsy and biopsy); training anatomic pathology residents and fellows; teaching veterinary students in the preclinical years in the core curriculum and on the necropsy rotation; and advancing the understanding of disease processes through basic and clinical research. The successful candidates will work with the staff of the Anatomic Pathology laboratory in the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center (NYSAHDC), a state-of-the-art diagnostic facility supported by the State of New York.  The AHDC has capabilities in a wide range of diagnostic modalities housed in 12 dedicated diagnostic sections, including a BSL-3 laboratory.  Capabilities in the Anatomic Pathology laboratory include immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, molecular diagnostics, and digital microscopy. The section handles over 10,000 biopsies and 1,500 necropsies per year and is noted for its specialties in dermatopathology, hepatopathology, forensic pathology, wildlife pathology, osteopathology, and neuropathology services.  Teaching roles will vary based on the candidate; however, anatomic pathology faculty have teaching commitments in all four years of the veterinary curriculum with a range of didactic lectures and laboratory exercises. Dedication to curricular revitalization and novel teaching modalities that align with the college’s overall curricular redesign will be viewed favorably.

Research laboratories at the College of Veterinary Medicine house a diverse set of basic science and clinical programs and include dedicated space for pathology faculty requiring laboratories to support their research interests.  Faculty research in the Section of Anatomic Pathology is funded through various agencies including the National Institutes of Health (National Cancer Institute), private foundations, and a robust internal grant program at Cornell University.  Faculty research seeks to understand pathophysiology and disease mechanisms, leveraging a wide range of molecular, genomic, and biochemical approaches in their research, with access to a rich and growing biobank of specimens. We are a highly interactive group, with a strong history of funded collaborations, including ongoing multi-investigator grant subcontracts and joint appointments. There is abundant opportunity for collaborative research with colleagues across departments within our College and in other Colleges on campus; such collaborative research is strongly valued in our College.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences serves as a home for many campus-wide Centers that serve as hubs for various research areas, with additional informal working groups arising in areas including single cell genomics, transcriptional regulation, DNA replication, recombination and repair, and others. Cornell University is committed to enhancing faculty hiring and paving the way to new discovery.  The university has outstanding research resources for genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, microscopy, imaging core, flow cytometry, computational biology, proteomics and metabolomics.

Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree and have completed a three-year residency in veterinary pathology. Board certification in veterinary pathology (ACVP) is preferred, but board eligible individuals are encouraged to apply.  The candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills, as well as the ability to work cooperatively with clinicians at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals and at external clinics.

Distribution of effort in the section and department will be determined in accordance with the service needs, academic priorities, and candidate expertise and academic goals. The percentage of time spent on independent and/or collaborative research, clinical teaching and service, lecture and laboratory instruction of veterinary students, residents and fellows, are negotiable. Extensive opportunities for collaborative research exist at the College and University, including Weill Medical College and technology campuses in New York City. Competitive start-up packages are provided to tenure track faculty who will be establishing research programs.

Salary, rank and title will be commensurate with academic credentials and experience.
