Position Description:    

Applications are invited for a half-time lecturer in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. The lecturer’s duties will be (1) to teach a large mechatronics course required for the Mechanical Engineering major and (2) to support educational innovation in the same course, as part of a Cornell University Active Learning Initiative grant. This is a 50% position, covering the period June 18, 2021 through February 15, 2022

Job description: From August 15, 2021 through December 31st, 2021, the primary duties will be to teach MAE 3780, Mechatronics, in Fall 2021. This course, required for Mechanical Engineering majors, covers circuits from a Mechanical Engineering perspective, and culminates in a substantial design project involving sensors and actuators. As the official instructor for the course, the successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and delivering lectures, creating homeworks, lab assignments, design assignments, and exams, supervising teaching assistants and graders, and performing accreditation-related reporting. While in-person instruction is planned for Fall 2021, remote instruction is also a possibility. The successful candidate should be flexible and adaptable, and ideally should have successful experience in teaching a large course with lab component. Experience and comfort with remote instruction is a plus. In addition, an ability to make circuitry concepts relevant to Mechanical Engineering students is desired.

For the remainder of the appointment (June 18 through August 14, 2021, and January 1 through February 15, 2022), the primary duties will be to support educational innovation in MAE 3780. This work entails collaborating with a group of faculty and postdocs, including the course instructors, to develop and document course materials emphasizing active and inductive learning and real-life applications. Additional duties include evaluating metrics for the learning objectives of each class, and using those metrics to determine the efficacy of the course interventions. This part of the position is supported by a Cornell-wide initiative to shift the undergraduate curriculum toward active learning approaches; the wide range of participating departments is summarized here: . The candidate will have the opportunity to engage with the Center for Teaching Innovation and participate in weekly seminars with other Active Learning Initiative staff to receive training and support in designing and implementing research-based teaching strategies. Disseminating engineering education results via conference presentations and publications is desirable.

Additional duties will include providing input and support for the Active Learning Initiative activities in other Mechanical Engineering courses.

Required qualifications: • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, engineering education research, or a closely related field. Preferred qualifications include some combination of the following: • Experience teaching a large course with labs. • Strong background in electrical circuits / mechatronics. • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple faculty members and staff, adapting to diverse views and approaches • Ability to work independently • Experience with relevant literature and education research methods • Project leadership, time management, communication, and writing skills • Experience with curriculum development, teaching assistant training, or faculty development • Enthusiasm for learning new things (Because this project will involve integrating and applying many different research areas, an ability to grow is even more valuable than extensive experience in any one of the above areas.)
