Postdoctoral Associate
Department of Animal Science
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Cornell University
Ithaca, New York

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented identities to apply.

CALS is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.

The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratory, and companion animal species.  Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agriculture, and human health.

What You Will Do

As a Postdoctoral Associate, you will focus on field crop nutrient management on dairy farms. Your work will be a component of the Cornell Nutrient Management Spear Program, the applied research and extension program in field crops nutrient management for New York dairy and cash grain operations led by Dr. Quirine Ketterings, Professor in the Department of Animal Science (http://nmsp.cals.cornell.edu). Your responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating and documenting (journal articles, extension summaries, factsheets, oral presentations) the impact of manure application decisions (source, rate, method, timing) on nutrient dynamics, yield, carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions in corn and alfalfa/grass rotations.
  • Evaluating and documenting the fertilizer replacement value and soil health benefits of using various manure sources (liquid manure, solids from two different treatment systems).
  • Evaluating the impact of reduced tillage and cover crops on corn yield and field and farm’s carbon footprints.
  • Assisting other staff and students in applied research/extension when needed.

This is a full-time position and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a 1-year appointment with an option to extend for a 2nd year. Future possible extensions depend on funding and performance.

What We Need

We are looking for an individual that excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders. In this role, you will work across New York State and contribute to the sustainability of animal feeding operations. Additionally, we need someone who has:

  • Ph.D. in agronomy, crop and soil science, or animal science with a focus on the integration of disciplines and systems analyses.
  • Expertise in computer software applications for database management, spreadsheets, word processing, and statistical analyses.
  • Good analytical skills, including experience with statistical analyses of large datasets.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Experience with publication writing (peer-reviewed journal articles as well as extension publications).
  • Must have excellent communication skills and be a team player.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with faculty/staff in the Nutrient Management Spear Program at Cornell University as well as collaborators in the NetZero Initiative across the United States.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, including having reliable transportation or having and maintaining a valid driver’s license as well as undergoing a successful driver background check.
